Millions of people rely on Medicare for their health insurance needs, but what happens when they need more coverage than the program provides? That's where Medigap insurance comes in. Here's what you need to know.

What is Medigap insurance?

Medigap insurance is a type of supplemental insurance that can help cover some of the costs that Medicare doesn't cover. It's also called Medicare Supplement insurance. Medigap policies are sold by private insurance companies and can help pay for things like co-payments, deductibles, and coinsurance.

What are the different types of Medigap plans?

There are 10 different types of Medigap plans that are standardized by the federal government. The plans are lettered A through N. Each plan offers a different level of coverage, so it's important to choose the one that best meets your needs. For example, some plans have a high deductible with minimal coverage, while others, like Medigap Plan G, are comprehensive and cover almost all medical expenses.

Who needs Medigap insurance?

Anyone who has Medicare Part A and Part B can buy a Medigap policy. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can't also have a Medigap policy. This is because Medicare Advantage Plans already offer some of the benefits that Medigap policies cover.

How do you get Medigap insurance?

You can get Medigap insurance through a private insurance company. You'll need to have Medicare Part A and Part B to qualify, however. If you are unsure of who to call, talk to your auto or homeowner's insurance policy. They can typically refer you to another agent that handles health insurance policies in their office.

What are the benefits of Medigap insurance?

There are several benefits of having Medigap insurance, including:

  • Coverage. It can help cover some of the costs that Medicare doesn't cover, like co-payments, deductibles, and coinsurance.
  • Peace of mind. Medigap insurance can help give you peace of mind knowing that you have some extra coverage in case of an unexpected medical expense.
  • Choice. Medigap insurance policies are standardized, so you can choose the plan that best meets your needs.
  • Flexibility. You can change Medigap plans at any time your medical insurance needs to change.
  • Prescriptions. Medigap insurance can help you save money on prescription drugs.

Additionally, Medigap policies can cover some of the costs of medical care while you're traveling outside of the United States.
